Welcome Letter
August 22, 2011
Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
WELCOME TO THE 2011 – 2012 SCHOOL YEAR!
I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. I’m looking forward to an exciting and rewarding school year. This will be the beginning of my seventeenth year of teaching, so I look forward to an event filled one!
I would like to take some time to hopefully clear up any “first week of school”questions.
MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS TEXTBOOKS
I will be spending some time during the first week of school going over the features of our textbooks. Both Math and Language Arts textbooks and worksheets are going to be available on-line. The students will not necessarily have to bring their textbooks home in order to complete their homework! Yaaaa! Please look for more information on this to follow shortly.
HOMEWORK
Fifth grade students’ homework should always be NEAT and COMPLETE. You can also check each night’s homework on the school website which is posted no later than 5:00 p.m. each day. If a student is absent they need to check with me, and the other teachers, as to the work they missed. Make up work is based on the numbers of days a student was absent. If a test has been missed they will be expected to take
the test on the day they return to school. Or, if they have had an extended absence; they need to get with me, or any other teacher, to schedule a make up time.
CLASSROOM RULES
Classroom rules will be written by the students’ during the first week of school and will be sent home for parent signatures. Classroom rules will be posted in the classroom throughout the entire year. The student’s will be made aware of any consequences for choosing not to follow the rules according to our school handbook. Students in grade 5 will now follow the discipline policy of the middle school, which can include demerits. I will go over the discipline policy with the students during the first week of school. Because we are a Catholic school, each student will be expected to display Christian behavior at all times. Each student will be responsible and accountable for the choices they make.
CLASSROOM PROGRESS REPORTS
A designated red folder will contain homework, class work and all tests. There will be a form for you to sign each week that will also make you aware of any missing work, discipline problems or non-passing tests. All tests that have earned a grade lower than 70% must be signed and returned along with the progress report the followi
TESTS
We review for each test taken in fifth grade. A review will be done in class two or three days before each test so that each student can pace their studying. Extra credit is not an option for raising a grade in fifth grade, so it is imperative that students study to the best of their ability.
COMMUNICATION
Part of the success for the school year will depend on good communication between home
and school. Please be sure to check your child’s homework folder, or the school website, each night for any notes that I may have written or attached. You may also e-mail me with any questions or concerns. My
e-mail address is:

I am very excited about the year ahead, and look forward to having the privilege of teaching your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Marie Reed
